Hunewill Ranch is one of the great working guest ranches of the West. Situated in the heart of the eastern Sierras in Mono County, California, it was founded in 1861 by Napoleon Bonaparte Hunewill during the gold rush and is still operated by the Hunewill family.
I first met the family in 1977 at a conference near San Francisco, which began a lifelong friendship and association. It was on the ranch I first began seriously taking photographs. To document this wonderful place and family is to be engaged in the living history of our Western heritage and landscape.
